Workshop contextually linked with SAW, ERC Project
Organisers : Matthias HAYEK (CRCAO), Agathe KELLER (SPHERE)
– First, the differentiation between almanacs and calendars : Are they always different texts having separate names ? How are they used ? If they are distinct are the used jointly or not ? How are they elaborated ? Are they elaborated in relation to one another ?
– Second, the articulation of astronomical computations and observations with magical and divinatory practices, including fate computations : how are they mutually integrated to one another ? Is this always the case ?
– Third, the circulation of computational techniques for calendars and cosmological systems between India, China and Japan : Can we trace a transmission of those systems in Asia, and how were they received ?
These are precisely the three points we hope to discuss during this workshop. While presenting the specificities of each system in its original context, we will try to shed light on the way calendars and almanacs were adapted and used consequently to their transmission into a different context. We will pay a special attention to how almanacs and calendars were used and perceived by commoners.
